Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP Review

The features of Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP almost look too good to be true. When the PRO iON version was released, they called it the big brother. And that one wasn’t a cordless two-stage electric snow blower.

For your information, we decided to have a look at this recent release from Snow Joe. As you probably know, the unit is also available with a 5.0 Amp battery. But in this review, we will focus on the one with 6.0 Amp battery and dual port charger. After all, it’s the extra power we’re all looking for when choosing an electric snow thrower.

Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP main technical features

They call it a revolutionary snow blower because it’s the world’s first battery-powered, electric unit based on a two-stage functioning principle. As opposed to previous models, this one is also self-propelled, comes with more powerful batteries and a larger clearing path.
Long story short, Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP relies on the same OEM Branded brushless engine, only that this time at 2500W. A whopping difference in performances comes from the batteries as well. The unit is equipped with 2 Lithium Ion batteries at 6.0 Amp Hours and 40 Volts each. The Echo Sharp Technology Snow Joe used us with is still present. But since it boasts two batteries, the power increases considerably.

The snow blower features manual pitch control, yet it has 1 reverse speed and 3 forward speeds. It has a plowing capacity of 1000 pounds per minute and a maximum throwing distance of 32 feet. Even though cordless, it is equipped for heavy snow and should easily handle sloped terrain with obstacles.

The powerful battery pack makes the entire above possible. At the same time, the autonomy of the XRP version is comparable with the one of the previous versions. With an estimated run time of 50 minutes, the digital, self-propelled unit works like charm on paved surfaces. And when you’re running out of batteries, it takes about 3 hours to get back out in the snow.

How do all these numbers translate into the unit’s actual capacity? Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP offers a clearing path of 24-inch width and 13-inch depth. Both the auger diameter and the intake height revolve around 13 inches. So, to sum up, with this electric horse power you should do great in heavy snow of up to 13-inch depth.

The design of Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP snow blower

(Back to Top)
Just like the iON PRO predecessor, Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP comes with batteries and the dual-port charger in the package. It also takes a minimal assembly, easily explained through the product’s manual. But that’s where most resemblances stop in terms of design.

This snow blower is actually considerably bulkier than all the other electric units from Snow Joe. Picture a massive unit measuring 47-inch depth, 40-inch height and 25.7-inch width. On top of all that, it weighs a little over 100 pounds – 105.8lb to be more specific.

The manufacturer thought, however, at this inconvenient and introduced a pair of skid shoes together with the 2×13-inch tires. These two, coupled with the adjustable chute, the headlight, and the self-propelled mechanism make it a bit easier to handle. Yet the most attractive design feature is, without a doubt, the digital display. Having all its power at your fingertip must be truly enjoyable!

All in all, Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP combines three different materials in a rather bulkier format for an electric model. While the body is made of metal and the auger is made of steel, the adjustable chute is of plastic.

What customers have to say about Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP

(Back to Top)
Our readers were particularly interested in the Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP because of the extra power it promises. As an electric unit with two powerful batteries, it is highly appreciated. Users say it starts well, batteries recharge fast, it does a good job, throwing the snow surprisingly far away. Plus, it spares them from all the complications of a gas-powered snow blower.

But on this chapter, you’re probably more interested in the bad things that our readers report. There are usually three complaints that people would have. One concerns the fact that the unit moves a bit slow. The second is somewhat connected, relating to the poor traction of the tires. And the third one is about the lights on the display, which seem to be too dimmed and difficult to notice.

Some opted for snow chains, which considerably improved the traction. Yet the machine still requires a bit of effort, especially when it comes to pushing it uphill.

Also, some people complained about the position of the drive buttons and auger. Apparently, it can be difficult to engage the auger while the snow blower is on the move. Obviously, that’s a design fault that you cannot really tweak in any way.

Pros & cons of using this snow blower

(Back to Top)
Have you looked into other products from this manufacturer so far? Then you must have spotted the extra benefits of the Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP all by yourself by now:

  • Extra power coming from two, more powerful batteries, dual-stage functioning and multiple speeds;
  • Decent autonomy, comparable with other models that provide less power;
  • Easy to handle because of the self-propelled system;
  • Versatile and adaptable for different surfaces by simply adjusting the height of the skid shoes;
  • More efficient, thanks to the larger clearing path;
  • Convenient to use anytime, due to the headlight and the reduced noise;
  • Intuitive and easy to control through the digital display;
  • Equipped for heavy snow, works well in rough conditions and charges batteries fast;
  • Requires no special maintenance, no oil changes, no fuel refill;
  • Comes from an authoritative and trustworthy manufacturer, with a great customer support.

For an electric snow blower with the above technical configuration, the Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP is definitely a surprising ado to the Snow Joe series. The list of disadvantages will be relatively short:

  • Bigger and heavier than other electric models – you might as well need help with unboxing it;
  • Features no neutral gear, therefore, the wheel will be constantly either engaged or blocked;
  • The charger doesn’t automatically cut off the power when batteries are fully charged;
  • Because of its dimensions, it is also more difficult to turn around when outside, in the driveway or walkway.

Warranty & support terms for Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP

(Back to Top)
Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP falls under the same warranty terms that Snow Joe is practicing with every snow blower it sells. You’re looking at a 2-year full warranty for personal use and 90-day warranty for commercial use. As long as you use it according to the user’s manual, any defect in workmanship or materials will be covered by Snow Joe. Wearing parts do not make the subject of any kind of warranty!

Final considerations of Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP

(Back to Top)
The unit promises more power but it brings some operational challenges. When dealing with heavy snow and hating the gas-powered or just electric, corded units, Snow Joe iON24SB-XRP is an option. You’d have to be prepared, however, to do some efforts when pushing it around the yard. Otherwise, it’s Snow Joe we’re talking about. An electric unit, now in a two-stage configuration. It’s a novelty on the market and we actually recommend it.
